What to Expect During Your First Neurology Consultation

Back pain is common, but the cause can vary from a minor muscle strain to a condition involving the discs, joints, or nerves of the spine. Knowing which symptoms need medical attention can help you decide when it is time to see a specialist.

Being referred to a neurologist can feel overwhelming, especially if you don't know what to expect. Your first appointment is designed to identify the cause of your symptoms and determine the next steps in your care, not to rush into testing or treatment.

Your Medical History Matters

The neurologist will begin by discussing your symptoms, including when they started, how they've changed over time and how they affect your daily life. We also review your medical history, current medications and any previous imaging or test results. These details often provide valuable clues that help guide your evaluation.

The Neurological Examination

Unlike a routine physical, a neurological exam focuses on how your nervous system is functioning. Our provider may assess your strength, reflexes, coordination, balance, sensation, vision, speech and memory. These findings help determine whether your symptoms may be related to the brain, spinal cord, nerves or muscles.

Will You Need Additional Testing?

Not every patient requires additional testing. If needed, our neurologist may recommend tests such as an MRI, EMG and nerve conduction study or EEG to gather more information and confirm a diagnosis. Any recommended tests will be based on your symptoms and clinical findings.

How to Prepare

To make the most of your visit, bring:

  • A list of your current medications
  • Previous imaging or medical records, if available
  • Notes about your symptoms or questions you'd like to discuss

At Neurosciences & Spine Group, our goal is to provide a thorough evaluation, answer your questions and develop a personalized care plan that helps you move forward with confidence.
