Antidepressants Not Working?

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is an innovative, FDA-cleared therapy that can help people who struggle with Major Depressive Disorder even after taking antidepressant medication. It helps activate the natural function of the brain’s neurotransmitters using a non-invasive magnetic field, and is not ECT (electroconvulsive therapy).

Because NeuroStar is a non-drug treatment, people don’t experience side effects like those associated with antidepressant medications. The most common side effect is temporary pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site. These effects are temporary and do not occur for most people after the first week of treatment.

TMS - A Non-Invasive Procedure

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. It relieves symptoms that are not responsive to other depression treatments.

When to consider TMS as a treatment option:
TMS is a safe, effective and FDA-approved treatment for treatment- resistant depression. It does not does not require surgery or implanting electrodes, nor does it cause seizures or require complete sedation with anesthesia.

Side effects are generally mild and typically improve after the first week or two of treatment. The most common side effect is headache, which is typically successfully treated with over-the-counter pain relievers.

What to expect:
To determine if TMS is right for you, an initial evaluation is needed. Patients who qualify are treated four or five times a week for six weeks. Appointments usually last for 30 to 40 minutes. Let your doctor or mental health provider know if:

  • Have any metal or medical device implants in your body
  • You are taking any medications, including over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements or vitamins
  • You have a history of seizures or mania, any past injuries or surgeries, or any other physical or mental health problems
